Along with her acclaimed trio mates, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr., they have delivered on that promise with a new album that is at times tender, yet emotionally intelligent, and well-conceived. On OASIS, Hilton notes that the album title refers to her special place of refuge, and relief and knew, while she herself needed an antidote during these tumultuous times, others were seeking their own safe haven as well. The opening track, "Twists of Fate" surprises the senses with its cool laid back vibe laced with an energy related to the electricity of Thelonious Monk and Count Basie’s best excursions in bop with Hilton leaving plenty of aural room and Curtis and Whitfield laying down some incredibly arresting rhythms. Then the trio segues into the Horace Silver influenced, "Adventure Lands". Compositions like the title track, "Oasis", "Watercolor World" and "Sunday Morning" showcase the trio’s collective ability to coalesce around an ethereal or, conversely, ecstatic moods; at times with washes of free jazz and cascading notes fluttering with joy. The classic George Gershwin tune, "Fascinating Rhythm" now travels in some new directions with the supple grooves of Curtis and Whitfield as well as yielding the melody under Hilton’s supple touch, and is a good companion to Hilton’s "Vapors & Shadows" as well as the lively "Just for Fun". "Lazy Daisy" is a slow blues for a sunny afternoon, though here with an impish “twist” mixing bluesy tones against the baby-steps of innocent melodic ideas. Latin rhythms weave in and out of Hilton’s compositions, and here are showcased on the fast paced "Sunshine States". "Warm Summer Night" ends the album in a solo piano version awash in Americana.

Cover photo by Aaron Regan.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0758/1250/3845/files/HILTON_OASIS_COVER_800x800_0c0044e8-5dd9-4670-80d3-b98961f6ef95.avif?v=1761600776
lisa-hilton-paradise-cove-cd
Lisa Hilton - Paradise Cove (CD)

Lisa Hilton / piano
Igmar Thomas / trumpet
Luques Curtis / bass
Obed Calvaire / drums

#1 Amazon New Release/Jazz
#9 JazzWeek.com Radio Chart
10 Albums You Need To Know: Jazziz Magazine
#11 Amazon of all Cool Jazz Albums
#14 ZMR Music Chart
#67 Top Albums Jazz Week albums for the year
Featured New Release/Jazz on Apple Music
Best Jazz Albums Honorable Mention NYC Jazz Record

“A unique and brilliant sound by one of the best jazz pianists and composers around.” KVNF Radio

“Lisa Hilton's gorgeous new recording, Paradise Cove… It is an enduring work, as the lucid and uncomplicated motifs of "Another Simple Sunday With You" and the majestic uplift of "Storybook Sequel" (a tune that should become a chestnut) instantly reveal. Our world today desires and deserves a lift after the last couple years, and with the music of Paradise Cove we aim to boost spirits everywhere.” Hilton’s twenty-sixth recording debuts her dynamic new L.I.L.O. Quartet with Hilton on piano, trumpeter Igmar Thomas, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire. (L.I.L.O. for their first initials). Hilton has performed with the in-demand bassist regularly for several years, but the charismatic trumpeter, Curtis’s former roommate at Berklee College of Music, is a compelling addition, complimenting Hilton’s fluid style and bluesy riffs. Calvaire, who regularly works with SFJAZZ Collective as well as Wynton Marsalis, contributes considerable creativity to this cohesive band. After recording at The Village Studios in Santa Monica, California Hilton declared, “The L.I.L.O. quartet is my favorite band ever… I bet anyone listening will hear the enjoyment we had!” Hilton chose the title Paradise Cove as a reference to our cultural need to find a ‘cove’ or protected spot in our personal lives on a daily basis to escape, revitalize, or reboot and to create a ‘paradise’ or state of grace amid today’s fast-moving times.

The nine original tracks and two cover tunes range from the expressive melodicism of “Another Simple Sunday With You” and the title track “Paradise Cove” to the wildly upbeat blowing on Dizzy Gillespie’s 1957 jazz classic “Birks’ Works,” Hilton’s own “Blues Vagabond” as well as her “Fast Time Blues.” These tracks exhibit plenty of the quartet’s improvisational fireworks along with some retro vibes. On a quieter note, the wistful cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's 1965 pop hit “What the World Needs Now is Love” and the moving “Storybook Sequel” showcase a band in touch with a range of emotions and performance styles. Hilton also includes a Latin tinge with the exuberant “Cha Cha Cha À La Carte” as well as the trio tune “Mercurial Moments,” which highlights excellent bass soloing by Curtis and exciting drumming by Calvaire. “Mediterranean Dreams” is a more classical piece for the trio while “Night Cap and a Little Chaos” has an enticing noir energy that rounds out these vibrant and well recorded tracks.

1 BIRKS’ WORKS / Dizzy Gillespie
2 FAST TIME BLUES
3 BLUES VAGABOND
4 ANOTHER SIMPLE SUNDAY WITH YOU
5 CHA CHA CHA A´ LA CARTE
6 MERCURIAL MOMENTS
7 NIGHT CAP & A LITTLE CHAOS
8 STORYBOOK SEQUEL
9 MEDITERRANEAN DREAMS
10WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE /Bacharach
11 PARADISE COVE
Running Time: about 50 minutes
Cover photography & design by Aaron Regan. Visually we added the vintage luggage - our past - but we are definitely moving forward. In this collection, you will hear influences from jazz icons like Thelonious Monk and Count Basie, or bluesmen like Muddy Waters, along with the rock anthems of Billy Joe Armstrong and Green Day, the cool rhythms of Dirty Projectors, the big bass sounds of Deep Purple, the balladry of Chopin and Stephen Foster, masters like Prokofiev, Steve Reich, Henry Mancini, Scott Joplin, and even nursery rhymes – you get the idea- everything has potential for us as musicians."

One especially noteworthy characteristic of this new release is how Hilton frees the bass and drums from the ordinary constraints of supporting players. Waits' floating, hovering colors and Grenadier's tersely dancing countermelodies attest to the chemistry and camaraderie of top musicians in what is decidedly a group effort. As producer, Hilton has enlisted renowned engineer James Farber, along with her longtime engineering team of the multi-Grammy winning Al Schmitt and Gavin Lurssen for an audiophile recording that captures every lingering nuance across the sonic spectrum, from Hilton's murkiest low notes to the whisper of a cymbal or overtone from the bass. It's the latest and arguably most fascinating chapter in the career of one of jazz's most irrepressible, original voices.

At this point in her history as a jazz artist, Hilton consistently mixes tradition, with a defiantly individual voice, equal parts purist tunesmith and sonic adventurer. The album kicks off on a lithely suspenseful, modally-charged note with the title track, followed by the irresistibly gleeful bounce of "Just for Fun". "Stepping Into Paradise" hints at tango and reggae all the way up to a to a rapturously lyrical intermezzo, while the artfully shapeshifting "Evening Song" evokes Bill Evans or Brad Mehldau at their most lyrical. The urban grit and edgy rhythmic freedom of "City Streets" rubs up against the booming intro and hypnotically menacing pedal point of "Lost and Found". The steady insistence of "Emergency" evokes anthemic rock in an inspired improvisational moment, while "Unforgotten" swings with an elegaic bluesiness. Throughout the recording, Hilton holds the center against Grenadier's polyrhythms and iconic soloing and Waits' coloristically shuffling clusters, ethereal washes and bold statements. Additional tracks include the jaunty ragtime-inspired vignette "Stop and Go", while "Slow Down" swings with masterfully rhythmic dynamics to an almost epic intensity and then back down to suspense again. The album concludes with a solo piano piece, "Huckleberry Moon", evoking a peaceful, and bucolic vibe.

Cover Photo by James Grant

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0758/1250/3845/files/getaway_album_cover_lisa_k_hilton_jazz.avif?v=1761602385
lisa-hilton-feeling-good-cd
Lisa Hilton - Feeling Good (CD)

"This album will definitely leave you 'Feeling Good'" WAER Radio/NY
“In pianist Lisa Hilton's case, one hears echoes of such greats as Stan Getz, Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson.” Radio & Records Magazine
''Feeling Good' is captivating." WNUA Radio/Chicago
"I'm hooked!."WTMD Radio MD

Lisa Hilton / piano
Phil Feather / woodwinds
Craig Stull / guitar
Reggie McBride / bass
Tal Bergman / drums

“Feeling Good... In composing I draw from times like these to share my experiences, moods, and emotions: like a musical blog or photo album. The songs on this recording are the moments worth remembering in life; whether they make us smile and dance, or create a wistful ambience. I hope they touch you as positively as they touch me. I admire the beautiful melodies of our great American songwriters of the 30’s, the Blues of the South, and the rhythmic and melodic hooks of classic jazz that was born here in the 1950’s and still sounds cool now. I believe that jazz today can draw inspiration from all these sources and still sound new, while blending with tradition. In the studio, we recorded acoustic instruments without overdubs or similar effects. To keep the improvisational spirit on edge, no sheet music or “charts” were used for the compositions I wrote. I introduced a new song, describe the approach I desired, and then we would immediately record. I encouraged Bobby Militello, Reggie McBride and John Friday to stretch out, experiment, and have fun. Final track selections were made based on expressiveness, not on how “perfect” they were. My goal was to create a tangible mood with each piece, and to enjoy the specific tone and beauty inherent in each instrument. Ensemble recordings are fine, and I enjoy a lot of them, but I love the intimacy of solo piano – especially from an artist with Lisa Hilton’s exceptional playing style. The music ranges from smooth ballads to mellow jazz to full-blown blues, and twelve of the thirteen tracks are original. “Evening Song” opens the album on a quiet, peaceful note. Almost a lullaby, the gentle melody envelops the listener with warmth. I really love this piece! “Close To My Heart” is a gentle ballad that has lyrics in the liner notes that are not sung on the recording, but you can always sing along! “29 Palms” is a dark, earthy piece with an interesting rhythm that slips a beat here and there, giving it an edge. I really like this one, too!

“Angry Again” returns to the blues style that Hilton does so well. Lyrics for this song are also in the liner notes for those who are so inclined. They also explain why the music goes from fiery to conciliatory and pleading. “Waterfall” is a beautiful, sparkling piece that’s a bit more abstract than some of the other pieces. The infectious rhythm suggests the flow of water while the right hand displays the more random splashes. The award-winning composer and acclaimed pianist generously shares the spotlight with her stellar bandmates on eleven standout tracks. In a natural and genre-fluid approach, Hilton seamlessly combines the renowned 1959 cool jazz classic So What by Miles Davis alongside the 2024 tune Wildflower by singer/songwriter Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell, as well as nine of her own compositions. Although both of the cover tracks are notable, the legendary Davis track begins with Hilton’s wafting modal introduction, which merges gently into the iconic two-note motif before unfurling to the virtuosic intensity of the band. Although Thomas’s and Allen’s horns each treat the listener with their prowess, Curtis holds the band steady with an upbeat intensity, and Royston shines in his percussion role, leaving no doubt this quintet has the ability to subtly reinvigorate a classic. In contrast, the subdued Wildflower with Thomas on muted trumpet showcases the vulnerability inherent in this song about regret. Hilton has a way of inconspicuously reinventing a standard from any era, and her band willingly supports that vision.
Tenor sax man JD Allen is a welcome return, having recorded eight previous albums with Hilton. Their compatibility has always been apparent, weaving complementary lines on the title track Extended Daydream, or swinging together on the finger snapping Momentary Mystery. Tropical Tuesday begins with a delightful Latin rhythm perfect for Curtis’s talents and showcases Hilton’s abundant melodic skills, while It’s Just For Now displays her fluid soloing style. Switching it up, the quintet launches wholeheartedly into Here & There & Back & Forth, chock full of musical references from several eras. Hilton writes in her liner notes that the sensitive tunes Seabirds and Blues on the Beach reference the recent fires in Southern California, while Sunset Tale and the solo piano Spacious Skies call for us to find relief from today’s challenges in nature’s beauty, closing out the album with a slightly classical feeling. If a daydream is a hopeful or insightful experience, the arc of Extended Daydream does extend hope and beauty along with a wallop of improvisational energy and style. For lovers of tradition, the title track Nocturnal, Whirlwind and the classic, Willow Weep for Me allow for Stafford’s fluid trumpet and flugelhorn and Allen’s husky tenor tone to shine. The Latin flavored, Spark in the Night, showcases Sanchez and August and their extensive Latin backgrounds in a catchy and appealing way, while Twilight is impressionistic. A surprise choice is The Pixies’ Where is my Mind – so simply stated, then turning in another direction by the finale. It’s on the bluesy Seduction and the tender An August Remembered that Hilton’s flowing lines and compositional ideas are highlighted. Also included is Hilton’s Midnight Sonata for piano, bass and drums: I. Symphony of Blues II. Desire and III. Midnight Stars. “I have 200+ tracks on iTunes that I have composed or arranged now,” Hilton explains, “and felt inspired to create a larger work of music. Midnight Sonata merges a classical format with the freedom of American jazz and blues in a method I call trans-genre. Many of our great American composers composed in classical music that I have been inspired by: George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Dave Brubeck to name a few. It was challenging as well as being a lot of fun compositionally.” While the sonata form is in tact, Hilton used improvisation, blues, modal washes, shifting key centers, free jazz, impressionism and extended technique in creating a refreshing yet familiar vibe. Allen. “The goal of an artist is to express what is happening in our world and create a connection that others hear, see or feel,” Hilton explains. “The last few years have been challenging to so many, and it feel we need to somehow, shift our perspective – like a kaleidoscope shifts it’s pretty pieces, and view our world and lives with a new point of view – that’s what each of us can do on a daily basis. Musically we are taking all the elements of music and jazz, and shifting them into “new” configurations that are, delightful to the ear. Kaleidoscope is about personal change as well as musical progress.” Joining Hilton once again is bassist, Larry Grenadier – well known for his consistent virtuosity and recordings with Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny Chris Potter and his own Fly Trio. For the first time, Marcus Gilmore joins Hilton, with a depth of experience and family history. Ben Ratliffe writes in the New York Times of Gilmore: “The grandson of Roy Haynes, jazz’s most important living drummer, but he has proved his own virtues quickly. Hilton also features the acclaimed and deep tones of tenor sax, J.D. Allen on three tracks. Kaleidoscope’s upbeat vibe encompasses retro bop, avant- garde, impressionist and minimalist ideas in eleven tracks. Audiophiles will enjoy the rich sound contributed by the best sound engineers in the world with Al Schmitt, Gavin Lurssen and James Farber all involved. Hilton starts with the retro groove of “Simmer” where Horace Silver or early Herbie Hancock would feel at home, then moves into the noir of “Whispered Confessions” and “Labyrinth.” The trio switches it up on the aptly named, “Bach, Basie, Bird Boogie Blues Bop,” then shifts to the languid, “When I Fall in Love” by Heyman & Young. Somehow channeling Bill Evans and Jelly Roll Morton in this dreamy standard works in a surprising and refreshing way. The only other cover is essentially bookend – Adele’s “One and Only” – a new pop jazz standard equally at home with the Heyman & Young here. Allen gets free rein for his dusky tenor on “Midnight Mania,” where the band leads a manic free explosion and back. The title track, “Kaleidoscope,” the bluesy “Blue Horizon” and the solo take of “Stepping Into Paradise” all showcase Hilton’s intimate piano wafting improvisations. 'Escapism' gives truth to this ever so elegantly." JazzDaGama

Lisa Hilton Promotes Peace, Tranquility and Positive Energy with ESCAPISM
For her 20th album Lisa Hilton wanted to provide uplift and relief, where listeners can be energized and feel rejuvenated, and this became the theme for the aptly titled ESCAPISM. Each composition seems to generate, by albums end, a mental release or escape all its own. “Artists have an important role in our culture and community--it is through art and music that our souls and spirits can be energized, balanced and entertained--we all need to “escape” or transcend our challenges. I want our music to be a positive force whether you’re listening on the subway, while at work or lounging on a tropical island! Our music embraces the good experiences in our world,” Hilton comments. After working solo on last year’s Day & Night release, Hilton brought back saxophonist JD Allen, trumpet and flugelhornist Terell Stafford, bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston into Avatar Studios.
“Our engineer James Farber, a true sound icon, captured the incredible sound of these amazing musicians - all leaders in their own right,” Hilton enthuses. “I feel very fortunate to continue to work again and again with them.” ESCAPISM is an audiophile’s delight from the team of top engineers that Hilton has worked with for years: besides recording engineer Farber, it was mixed by 23-time Grammy® Award-winning engineer Al Schmitt at the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood and mastered by multi-Grammy® Award winners Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen. The opening track, “Hot Summer Samba,” twirls in multiple Latin rhythms and melodic ideas that Hilton composed to start the album moving. That track segues into the fast-paced trio work of “Meltdown.” Hilton’s melodic touch is evident in “Another Everyday Adventure,” and the closer “Utopia Cornucopia,” both soundtracks to finding wonderland anywhere, anytime and where you least expect it. Although Hilton does not record many covers, her arrangement of Lerner & Lane’s classic “On A Clear Day” calms and inspires, suggested by the unsung lyrics “On a clear day...you’ll feel part of every mountain sea and shore.” The track highlights her excellent trio mates while showcasing Hilton’s ability to the interpret classics in new ways. The jaunty solo piece, “Escape Velocity Blues,” seems to channel Neal Hefti and Count Basie, but is all Hilton with her signature touch on the keys. The beauty of Allen’s tenor sax and Stafford’s clear flugelhorn, alongside her own performance, shine through on “Zero Gravity.” The tracks “Too Hot” and “29 Palms” are envelopes to a different kind of space, reaching in evocative and seemingly narrative directions. With all that continues to change in our world, ESCAPISM seeks a journey that is focused on the feelings and positive energy it creates. Hilton allows this journey to be constructed and articulated through her written compositions evoking a sentiment of peace, tranquility and upbeat energy.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0758/1250/3845/files/lisa_hilton_music_escapism_album_cover_composer_lisa_hilton_justin_bettman.avif?v=1766100883
lisa-hilton-lucky-all-along-cd
Lisa Hilton - Lucky All Along (CD)

#1 Amazon New Release Cool Jazz

Best of 2024 at All About Jazz

Recommended New Release: NYC Jazz Record

World Entertainment Award Nominations for: Best Jazz Album, Best Jazz Artist, Best Jazz Solo Performance

USA Songwriting Contest Finalist: “And Some Blues…” Best Jazz Composition

LISA HILTON / PIANO, IGMAR THOMAS / TRUMPET, RUDY ROYSTON / DRUMS, LUQUES CURTIS / BASS

“Hilton has pianistic depth and willingness to surrender to, and then occupy the emotions a song contains… all eleven tracks are strong.” Down Beat Magazine

“Imagine the peaks we could climb if everyone listening to Hilton or reading this played so well together. These musicians include some of the most iconic jazz artists of all time: Miles Davis (1926-1991), Chet Baker (1929-1988), Stan Getz (1927-1991), as well as pianist Bill Evans (1920-1980). These “cool” and very expressive artists favored a moody style of playing with innovative harmonic explorations versus the more energetic “hot”, or free jazz styles.

Hilton also mentions being inspired by impressionist artists, including Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), the French painter George Seurat (1859-1891), and French plein-air painter Claude Monet (1840-1926), who were searching for new ways to express what they saw and felt through their art. This same spirit has fueled explorations in a variety of musical directions on Hilton’s outstanding new quartet release.

Percolating with ideas, the nine original compositions and three cover tunes are intimate, enthralling, and laced throughout with rich blue tones, swinging with Hilton's expressive touch on the piano. Lucky All Along gracefully shares the spotlight with quartet mates Igmar Thomas on trumpet, Luques Curtis on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums and percussion.

Thomas’s virtuosity is stunning on Hilton’s tracks And Some Blues…, Prophesies and Predictions as well as the iconic All Blues by Miles Davis from his 1959 album Kind Of Blue, but blends well with Hilton’s round piano tones and bluesy solos. Curtis creates powerful and at times almost boisterous solos on these tracks too, delivering a steady stream of energy. Melodicism takes center stage on Hollywood Moment, reminiscent of some of Bill Evans’ pianism and Starry, Starry Eyes, which Hilton notes was inspired by impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh. Royston’s creative moves delight throughout but imbue the Latin tinge tunes Little Beach Mornings and Escapist Fantasy with charm and mastery. Big Sur View allows us to hear Hilton’s solo piano clarity and expression in an Americana composition with classical touches. The titular Lucky All Along, has a countrified vibe, with a touch of ragtime.

Hilton’s notes she chose two cover tunes because “I think jazz should reflect our times today and great composers of thisgeneration too”. See You Again, was co-written by singer/songwriter/producer Charlie Puth, whom Hilton met when he was still a student at Berklee College of Music. This touching tune was inspired by the loss of Puth’s friend in a motorcycle accident and radiates with Thomas’s improvisations and Royston’s steady support. Hilton added Puth’s solo piano intro to the finale of this track.

The intimate Snow On The Beach co-written by Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Jack Antonoff, is the last track on the album. On it, Hilton indulges her love of the piano with ten original tracks and the cover gem, Ernie’s Blues, (written by Ernie Wilkins). Backed by her ever-excellent band mates: Rudy Royston on drums and Luques Curtis on bass, Hilton’s elegantly swinging piano and engaging compositions encompass a range from traditional tracks, Latin, blues and retro seamlessly. Royston continually hits the marks on his kit, and Curtis shows off plenty of style over this splendid repertoire of compositions.

The album begins with an impressive bass solo from Curtis on the classic Ernie’s Blues. The tune’s complex chords and loose bluesy passages allow accomplished soloing from Hilton as well. Retro Road Trip highlights Royston’s rhythm skills and has a bit of a Prokofiev energy amid mid-century grooves. Inspired by classic American Standards, Hilton includes two romantic compositions here: So This Is Love and Nightingales and Fairy Tales - both evoking nostalgic charms and reminiscent of some of Bill Evans work in his sixties period. Too Hot dips into modal ideas creating its own melodic atmosphere. Hilton includes two Latin flavored compositions: Stepping Into Paradise as well as Santa Monica Samba, that show the versatility of the trio in mingling different Latin styles together effortlessly. Seduction is a solo piano piece that Hilton has recorded before, (some other tracks have also been recorded on past albums), with a new extended version here, showcasing Hilton’s love for the blues. Temporary Lullaby, written for Hilton’s daughter, is a melodic standout. In her liner notes, it mentions that 'More Than Another Day' nods to Miles Davis, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Cole Porter.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0758/1250/3845/files/lisa-hilton-lifeisbeautiful-album-cover-1024x1024.avif?v=1766104159
lisa-hilton-transparent-sky-cd
Lisa Hilton - Transparent Sky (CD)

#1 AMAZON NEW RELEASE/JAZZ
ALL ABOUT JAZZ: TOP ALBUMS OF 2021
One World Award Nomination/Jazz

Track List:

1)SANTA MONICA SAMBA

2) RANDOM JOURNEY

3) NIGHTINGALES & FAIRY TALES

4) LIVING IN LIMBO

5) GOD BLESS THE CHILD

6) CHROMATIC CHRONICLES

7) FALL UPON A MIRACLE

8) INFINITE TANGO

9) EXTRAORDINARY EVERYDAY THINGS

10) TRANSPARENT SKY

Review
“A new and vibrant jazz album for Lisa Hilton, and her gorgeous trio formed by Rudy Royston and Luques Curtis. Essential for a sophisticated go to, this music is pure joy with blue notes and neo classical structures. Rich in glorious harmonies and unique compositions, the pianist's music is complex and quite original, not safely falling into any preconceived category except as modern jazz rich in minimalist shades. With a variety of genres masterfully mixing African American traditions and elegant jazz with new approaches and an optimistic style. Perfect sound, sweet, experimental enough, for a surprisingly wide range of musical ideas.” --WindOut Magazine/Italy

“I don’t actually like this particular CD…. Rich with glorious harmonies and unique compositions, Hilton’s swinging band radiates a sun bleached aura to listeners. Throughout the album Hilton, Royston and Curtis develop a surprisingly wide range of rhythmic ideas from a variety of genres, masterfully blending classic traditions with new approaches and upbeat style.

The recording jumps in with the Latin tinged "Santa Monica Samba," quickly following with the equally energetic "Random Journey" on this collection of nine originals, plus one cover. “What developed this year was a LOT of movement and richer chords and harmonies – which makes sense when you consider how static last year was. As musicians we need to challenge and also entertain ourselves, so I think that’s why I subconsciously wrote in so many rhythm changes and multiple harmonic directions,” says Hilton. "Living In Limbo," "Chromatic Chronicles," "Fall Upon a Miracle" and "Infinite Tango," highlight the multiple creative rhythms of Hilton’s compositions and showcase ample opportunities for Curtis’s agile bass, and the delightful details of Royston’s drums.

Hilton has a way with ballads, and "Nightingales & Fairy Tales" is no exception. With its slight nod to Bill Evans in the sixties, this has the making of a jazz classic for a twenty - first century audience. In the same vein, a cover of "God Bless The Child," co-written by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr, is a charmer, and like all the tracks here, is skillfully and originally presented without being forced. “For a long time I’ve been trying to record cover songs by women who were composers, because there is very little attention paid to them in jazz. I think it’s important to give women recognition for their range of talents, and by promoting them, maybe we will see less discrimination in music”, Hilton muses.

Slowing towards the album’s end, "Extraordinary Everyday Things" is a calm and expressive soundscape, but with a surprise twist, Hilton finishes up with the title track, "Transparent Sky" as a sonorous piano solo. “The melody is beautiful and has a bit of swing, but the harmonic ideas are quite chromatic and dissonant with overlapping/lingering sonorities between bar lines.” She says. “This piece needs to be played sensitively or it will sound harsh, but that is like our lives today - we are living in sensitive times and need to be aware of how we connect and communicate. The solo piano clearly delivers those delicate harmonies along with the emotions. It’s about accepting our world as it is, whatever may be happening at that moment. Tomorrow will bring what it will, but there is still beauty to be found if we look for it, amid the dissonance of our times.” Hilton explains.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0758/1250/3845/files/Lisa_Hilton_Jazz_musician_TRANSPARENT_SKY_2ecaf6bc-6335-4ab5-9e80-4072644d45bd.avif?v=1766104933
lisa-hilton-chalkboard-destiny-cd
Lisa Hilton - Chalkboard Destiny (CD)

Reviews:
"Albums like Chalkboard Destiny scream for attention and praise.
